Villacher Kirchtag
On the first Saturday in August, and in the week leading up to it, Villach is a hive of activity. Every year the Villacher Kirchtag attracts over 400,000 visitors to the old town, decked out for the occasion in its festive finery. Austria’s biggest folk-tradition festival is a real treat for young and old alike, with something to suit all tastes, and a feast for all the senses.
More than 130 individual events showcase authentic local and foreign traditional culture. In Villach’s main square, Austria’s biggest open-air restaurant invites you to enjoy the finest Kirchtag specialities, whilst listening to the best folk music bands in Austria performing on five stages – all without amplifiers of course!
And in the amusements and entertainment area there is something for everybody – for the young and the young at heart. The big modern fun-fair is different every year, always offering new attractions. Then on Kirchtag Saturday, there is the colourful Traditional Costumes parade, with more than 3,500 participants and dozens of brass bands.
The ambience of Villach’s old town, the cheerful bustle, the top-quality folk culture programme, outstanding Villach hospitality, as well as the high overall quality standards set by the organisers, combine to make the Villacher Kirchtag an incomparable experience for every visitor.
